Marine Components International (MCI), a UK-based distributor of maritime products, has reported that the Temo 1000 electric outboard motor was used throughout Salcombe Merlin Rocket Week (29 June to 4 July), a high-traffic sailing event in the UK dinghy calendar.

The motor was deployed as part of a real-world test of its capabilities in the active and tidal waters of Salcombe Harbour.

This year, Salcombe Harbour invested in an electric RIB as part of broader efforts to reduce local emissions. To assess the suitability of the Temo 1000, a sailor participating in the regatta used the motor to power their tender for daily transfers between Whitestrand and Mill Bay, the key route for competitors.

The user operated the compact outboard in conditions that included strong tidal flow and windless approaches. The motor, which features 28 kg of static thrust (equivalent to 3HP) and a cassette battery, was used consistently to make these short crossings. Its integrated functions include a retractable tiller, twist-grip throttle and a 360° rotating mount designed to provide directional control.

The device was first used on arrival at Salcombe, where the crew launched their tender from Batson Boat Park. The Temo 1000 was then used throughout the event to support daily crew movements and broadcast activity on social media.

“It was brilliant having the Temo on the tender,” said sailor Mark Barwell. “Salcombe Harbour is a hive of activity, and it was so easy to mount each day, pick up fellow sailors, and get to Mill Bay and back. At the end of each race day, it came off just as quickly. No noise, no hassle – just smooth, silent power.”

The motor was noted to provide sufficient thrust for short crossings even when travelling against the ebb tide. Its battery offers a range of up to two hours per charge. While it occasionally lagged behind the race fleet, the speed limitation reportedly helped the user remain within the harbour’s speed restrictions.

With a total weight of 15 kg including the battery, the Temo 1000 does not emit fumes or require fuel. It was used as a tender engine and for filming during the event.

In 2024, French electric propulsion specialist Temo completed a €6m Series A financing round, expanding across Europe and confirming its intention to enter the American market.
