Greenpeace UK orders custom boat

red RIB to be used by Greenpeace with Yamaha outboard

Greenpeace UK has commissioned XS RIBS to build a custom XS 700 boat. The idea is that the RIB will support the charity — which champions sustainable solutions — in its various environmentally led operations.

This isn’t the first time XS RIBS has been approached by Greenpeace to create a purpose-built boat for its operations. The charity first worked with the team in the 1980s. Demonstrating years of boat-building expertise, many of those specialists had a hand in building its first Greenpeace commission all those years ago.

The vessel’s outboard’s from Yamaha.

“Our team are the same in part that made the original Greenpeace boats years ago, so when we say we have over 100 years of collective experience in building and supplying custom RIBS, we really mean it,” says Laurence Lock, MD at XS RIBS.

“We believe that continuity is the reason we have various leisure and commercial customers, including Greenpeace, repeatedly coming back to us for purpose-built, made-to-order boats.

“Not only this, but our customers also appreciate that our boats are built, in their entirety, here in the UK, which allows us full control over the process, ensuring we use the best parts and can oversee our builds from scratch.

“We’ve partnered with Yamaha for decades, driven by customer demand for elite engines, and we believe that Greenpeace UK has chosen to commission Yamaha’s F 150hp Outboard to power our RIB, due to its enduring reputation for premium quality. There is no doubt that Yamaha is one of the global leaders in this field.”

Owned by Barnet Marine Centre, XS RIBS manufactures each of its custom crafts at its purpose-built Yorkshire-based facility.

in August last year Greenpeace announced it was building a sailing vessel with DynaRig system. According to deputy international programme director Fabien Ronda, the NGO will use the new ship to “chase and confront looters and polluters on the high seas.”

For those happily riding the podcast trend, there’s a fascinating two-parter called: Attack on Greenpeace: France’s Nuclear Bomb. It’s about how the Rainbow Warrior – Greenpeace’s fearless flagship – was sunk in a shocking act of French espionage in 1985.
