The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has launched its largest ever open survey, as part of the ‘Reflections on Water’ campaign, which is aimed at capturing the most comprehensive picture of life on the water across the UK.
With participation in sailing and boating declining, the RYA is calling on its community to share experiences and help shape the future of the sport. The survey is open to all, whether lifelong sailors or newcomers, and will run until 1 December 2025.
The survey is designed to explore grassroots participation, professional pathways, and wider experiences in the sailing and boating sectors. Results and insights will then inform the RYA’s future initiatives, policies, and investment priorities.
The ‘Reflections on Water’ broader campaign includes a range of previous initiatives. The Urban Winds Project provides training and employment opportunities for inspiring sailing instructors in London. And, the Female Future Group, which is working to improve the country for the development of female sailors.
Through the Onboard Programme, over 1.3m children have been introduced to sailing and windsurfing over the past two decades, with a further 1m planned. Stories from the campaign highlight the diversity of experiences in the community.
Sara Sutcliffe, RYA CEO, comments: “Sailing and boating aren’t just pastimes — they’re part of who we are. They’re passions, traditions, careers, and, for many, a way of life. Right now, our community is at a turning point.
“The Reflections on Water Survey is your chance to be heard — to share not only the joys of life on the water, but the barriers too. This isn’t a box-ticking exercise; it’s about shaping a future where everyone has the chance to belong, to participate, and to thrive.”
The RYA Reflections on Water survey can be completed online within 30 minutes, and the RYA aims to gather over 7,000 responses, with findings scheduled for publication early next year.
