As yachts grow larger and crews get smaller, German electronics specialist Thitronik is betting that smartphone technology can fill the gap. The company, based in Eckernförde, Schleswig-Holstein, has developed Smartdock, a control system that allows boat owners to dock and cast off directly from their phone. Founder Mark Thietje says the idea came from his own experience of looking for a simpler control solution for his own boat.
Unveiling at Metstrade and nominated for the DAME Award for technical innovation, Smartdock aims to simplify boat handling without additional control units. Known for security systems for motorhomes, Thitronik has transferred its plug-and-play design approach to the marine sector, creating a system that works without extra hardware or controllers.
Smartdock includes a compact control unit, two wiring harnesses, and an app that links the helm, engine control, and—if installed—bow and stern thrusters. The app connects via Bluetooth and allows manoeuvring either from the helm or from deck level for a clearer view. For safety, operation is limited to manoeuvring speed, and if the physical controls are moved at the helm, the app immediately disables itself.
The company says the system reacts almost instantly, giving real-time control. Its user interface is minimalist, with an optional ‘controller view’ landscape mode for users who prefer a more traditional display. Software updates are provided wirelessly, so no hardware changes are required.
Smartdock is compatible with engines from Mercury, Volvo Penta, Yamaha and MAN, as well as electric motors from Danish manufacturer EPT. Further integrations, including Yanmar, Suzuki and Honda, are under development. The system supports both motorboats and sailing yachts – more information is available on the company’s website.
Available since June 2025, Smartdock is priced at €3,950, or €4,950 with bow and stern thruster integration. It can be installed by the user, but Thitronik also offers a professional installation service.
Thitronik’s entry into the marine market marks a shift toward greater digitalisation in boat handling — a trend that could appeal strongly to private owners managing larger vessels without professional crew.
