RYA to close SafeTrx vessel-tracking and safety app

RYA SafeTrx, a vessel-tracking, safety, and communications app, will close on 31 December 2025 in the UK.

RYA SafeTrx is a free app designed to let sailors let their loved ones know where they are, share details of their trip, photos and gain quick access to emergency services.

SafeTrx continues to be available in other countries through separate licensees, and the change only applies to the UK version, called RYA Safetrx.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) confirms that the decision to close RYA SafeTrx has been made following discussions with HM Coastguard and reflects ‘changes in technology’ since the app was introduced. HM Coastguard’s search and rescue services continue to operate as normal, along with established safety procedures and equipment.

Users are advised to plan journeys in advance and ensure they know how to respond in an emergency at sea. Reliable means of communication onboard include a VHF/DSC radio, a personal locator beacon or a mobile phone kept in a waterproof pouch. Those heading out on the water are also encouraged to inform someone ashore of their planned route and expected return time so they can contact 999 and ask for the Coastguard if the vessel is overdue. Wearing a personal flotation device and checking onboard and personal equipment remain standard safety measures.

The RYA and HM Coastguard are arranging for the ownership and vessel data held by RYA SafeTrx to move to a secure HM Coastguard database. Users who do not want their information transferred can delete their account before the app closes on 31 December 2025. After that point, details can be updated or removed by emailing the SafeTrx team.

Mel Hide, RYA director of external affairs, says: “We appreciate that the news that the tracking side of RYA SafeTrx will no longer be provided will be disappointing for active users of the app. However, we are pleased that ownership and vessel data held within RYA SafeTrx will be transferred to HM Coastguard and can continue to be referenced in an emergency.”

Assistant chief coastguard Matt Leat says: “While we are sorry to see RYA SafeTrx come to an end, we want to reassure all water users that this change will not affect HM Coastguard’s ability to respond to emergencies and rescue those in distress.

“Your safety remains our top priority. To ensure you can call for help when needed, please make sure you carry appropriate safety equipment, such as lifejackets, and have reliable means of communication, such as a VHF radio or mobile phone in a waterproof pouch.”

Additional coastal safety advice is available at the HM Coastguard website and the RYA Water Safety Hub.
