Dutch equipment distributor Vetus has introduced the M2HSET hybrid propulsion system for its M-Line two-cylinder diesel engines, giving boaters the option to switch between electric and diesel power.
Developed in-house, the Hybrid Set works with the M2.13 and M2.18 engines and is designed for both retrofits and new builds. Owners can add it to a compatible existing engine without replacing their propulsion setup, while boatbuilders can incorporate it into a new installation.
Electric-only mode is intended for low-speed cruising in areas such as marinas and inner-city waterways. Vetus describes this mode as silent, with no fuel use or emissions. When boaters need higher speeds or greater range, they can engage the diesel engine.
The system does not rely on shore power to charge its batteries. While the diesel engine runs, the rotating propeller shaft drives the electric motor, which acts as a generator and supplies up to 30 amps to recharge the connected battery bank for later electric use.
A serpentine belt connects the electric motor to the propeller shaft. A purpose-designed pulley provides the reduction ratio needed to match motor speed to the propeller. Vetus says it has developed the system around engine speed and gear ratio, taking cruising speed and operational efficiency into account.
Alongside the Hybrid Set, Vetus has introduced the ELPS2H, a side-mounted V-CAN control lever designed for hybrid propulsion. It includes a neutral safety switch as standard and allows boaters to control the two propulsion modes.
Sander Gesink, marketing director at Vetus, says: “The M2HSET hybrid system offers boaters a practical pathway to lower-emission boating without compromising on range, power or reliability. Delivering innovative solutions that make boating easier is our priority, making time spent on the water more efficient and more enjoyable. Following the M-Line 2 launch, additional Vetus Hybrid Sets will follow, with higher power ranges to suit even more boats.”
Founded in 1964, Vetus designs and manufactures boat systems for recreational and small commercial vessels, including engines, bow thrusters and anchoring equipment. It develops most of its more than 4,000 products in-house. The company is based in the Netherlands, with representation in 17 other countries and a worldwide distribution and service network.
Vetus is part of the Yanmar Marine Recreational Business Unit, which also includes Yanmar, Maxwell, Flexofold and Smartgyro.
