EP Technologies has introduced Svenner, which it describes as the world’s first solid-state marine battery to gain full DNV type approval under notation NR TAE000054J.

The Danish firm says its Svenner battery is positioned for use in new build and retrofit projects and is intended for OEM system integrators seeking a type-approved energy storage option.

Svenner uses solid-state cell technology that replaces most liquid electrolytes with solid materials — a configuration designed to provide stability under electrical or mechanical stress. The battery withstands six times overcharge and an 8mm nail puncture with no thermic reaction. The cells remain stable without fire in these test conditions. The company states that the design supports more than 10,000 charge cycles.

The solid-state chemistry is engineered for stable performance at elevated temperatures, including heavy-duty marine operation. The unit also includes a hardware override switch that allows personnel to override some protections in emergency scenarios manually.

Regulatory and insurance expectations for battery-based vessel propulsion continue to grow, making classification approval increasingly a core requirement for shipyards and system integrators. According to EP Technologies, the DNV type certification can reduce integration risk and also supports streamlined class compliance.

The battery is now available to order. It will be used across recreational, commercial, and industrial applications and is suited to ferries, workboats, performance yachts and hybrid systems. A Level 2 model is expected in January 2026 and — according to the firm — is projected to offer a 12 per cent performance increase while retaining the same dimensions and weight.

“Achieving DNV type-approval for our solid-state tech battery is a breakthrough for marine electrification,” said Marco Ottiker COO & co-owner of EP Technologies. “We’re now offering vessel designers and operators a turnkey energy-storage solution that combines the highest levels of safety, durability and performance, enabling the next generation of electric propulsion systems.”

EP Technologies was founded in 2013 by Kasper Falkenberg, who was joined in 2018 by Marco Ottiker.
