Three luxury yachts have been destroyed in Sydney after a fire ripped through an exclusive marina in Mosman.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters worked to battle a blaze in the early hours this morning (9 January), which destroyed three boats at The Spit marina in Mosman, on Sydney’s north shore.

More than 40 firefighters were called to the scene at 3:21am alongside a Port Authority of NSW firefighting vessel, Girawaa.  It took approximately 2.5 hours to extinguish the fire.

Emergency services said the fire took hold rapidly. Three large yachts were destroyed by fire and sunk, with a fourth sustaining serious damage.

Four people in the area were treated by emergency medical units for smoke inhalation. They did not require hospitalisation.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

FRNSW, liaising with the Environment Protection Authority, has deployed booms to contain debris and material, including oil and fuel.

FRNSW told 7News that it will be a difficult salvage operation. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
