North Sails Cowes Week has remained true to its roots over 199 years, and for most boats a single longer orienting race around the Solent each day remains the preferred option.

A short 3-mile drive downstream – or in the case of Upper Thames 1/2 mile tow from the club tender – found the fleet at Cookham Reach for the second day of our southern sojourn.

The RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race is measured in nautical miles, elapsed time and IRC corrected seconds, but the stories that will last are about the sailors.

Thursday’s planned start at 12.00 noon had to be delayed until the wind built over the bay and became stable, reaching 8-9 knots on the race course at 14.00, allowing the PRO Olivier de Turkheim to set his course around a 275° axis.
