Smooth Technology will exhibit at the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) in Tampa from 6–8 October. The company will join the Yachting Ventures Start-Up Pavilion, where it plans to meet manufacturers and marine repair businesses about specific material requirements.
The family-owned company develops adhesives, fillers and other speciality chemical formulations for marine applications. Its development process starts with a production or repair issue, such as a material setting at an unsuitable rate, excessive shrinkage or an issue with the finished surface. Smooth Technology assesses the customer’s materials, application process and required result before adjusting properties such as working time, exotherm and shrinkage.
Its Sitelines range comprises two product lines. RadiusTech formulations are designed for laminating fibreglass into tight curves and corners, including strakes and style lines. FairTech comprises fairing and repair materials for applications above and below the waterline.
Scout Boats has used the products in its composites operation. “With RadiusTech, we’re getting better results right out of the mould, and because we’re getting it right the first time, we’ve seen a measurable reduction in rework,” says Carter Welch, composites manager at Scout Boats. “FairTech applies smoother, cures faster and sands easier, which has cut our labour hours even further.”
Smooth Technology also develops formulations around the processes in which they will be used. The company examines the customer’s materials, application and desired result before adjusting properties such as working time, exotherm and shrinkage.
“Every builder has its own processes, and small differences in how a material behaves can matter on the production floor,” says founder Art Murphy. “Our starting point is to listen to the team using the product, understand the issue they are trying to solve and develop something that works for their application.”
The company has developed a custom radius putty for a boatbuilder dealing with visible print-through and distortion during hull production. The material was tailored for application after the gel coat. At Piedmont Composites & Tooling, its Sitelines Radius Tech LAV has been used to meet requirements for finish and performance.
“The Sitelines Radius Tech LAV has been a valuable addition to our operation, providing the quality, consistency, strength and finish we are looking for,” says David Himebaugh, president at Piedmont Composites & Tooling.
Smooth Technology’s products are also used for repairs. “Smooth Tech’s products have filled a gap that we were missing in mould work and small glass repairs,” says Frankie Marion, owner of XPLOR Boatworks. “The time savings and quality of product have been immediately impactful on our daily work and have made what were once temporary fixes permanent ones.”
Murphy founded Smooth Technology in 2025 after 25 years working in adhesives and coatings. His family has a three-generation connection to the marine industry. His grandfather sold equipment to the sector, his father worked with core materials, while his wife and son are now involved in the business.
Smooth Technology has worked with Scout Boats, Grady-White, Piedmont Composites & Tooling and XPLOR Boatworks. At IBEX, the company plans to meet established boatbuilders, smaller manufacturers and maintenance, repair and overhaul businesses to discuss material requirements in production and repair.
Smooth Technology is a family-owned formulator of custom adhesives and speciality chemicals for marine manufacturers and repair businesses. Founded in July 2025, it works with customers to understand their applications and develop materials suited to specific production needs.
