The upgraded Agios Nikolaos Marina in Lasithi, Crete, officially opened this week following a €2 million project significantly upgrading the marina’s infrastructure and facilities.
Located in the Greek town of Agios Nikolaos on the eastern coast of Crete, the marina offers more than 250 berths across concrete and floating pontoons, along with dry-docking facilities for over 160 vessels.
Site upgrades include new floating pontoons, modernised electricity and water supplies and electric charging infrastructure. Solar panels have also been installed, along with accessibility upgrades for people with disabilities.
The completion of the project comes as the marina secures its tourist port licence, which closes an issue that has been pending for more than 30 years.
The mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Manolis Menegakis, reflected on the project and the potential opportunities for future growth, noting that the completion of the project and the permit open the way for new funding and investments, with the goal of an even more modern and competitive marina, closely linked to the city and its economy.
The project, with a total budget of around €1.9 million was implemented by the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos through the Hellenic Agency for National Development and Innovation and funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Fund – NextGenerationEU.

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni attended the inauguration and said the modernised marina would create new opportunities for Agios Nikolaos and strengthen its position within Mediterranean marine tourism.
First vice president of the parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis described the upgraded marina as a hub of entrepreneurship, economic and tourist development, underlining the multiplier effect of marinas on local economies.
