Avikus USA vice president of recreational marine Sangwon Shin will present at three marine industry events this autumn, focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into recreational boats and superyachts.
His appearances are scheduled for the 2026 NMEA Marine Electronics Conference & Expo, the 66th Genoa International Boat Show and the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX). Drawing on experience with automotive advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), Shin will discuss how similar technologies can be applied in marine environments.
He will look at how AI, sensors, propulsion and steering controls, navigation electronics, user interfaces and the vessel itself need to work together in marine applications. Shin will also discuss the role of boatbuilders in developing marine ADAS from the early stages of vessel design, working with autonomy specialists, propulsion providers and marine electronics manufacturers.
“AI becomes truly valuable on the water only when it is integrated with the vessel from the start,” says Shin. “Boatbuilders understand the vessel, its intended use and how customers interact with it, while companies like Avikus bring specialised expertise in AI, sensor fusion and autonomous navigation. When we work together early, we can deliver marine ADAS that is intuitive, reliable and tailored to the boat. These sessions will focus on how the industry can move from isolated features to a coordinated, vessel-wide approach.”
Shin’s scheduled appearances
At NMEA on 29 September 2026, Shin will take part in the session “AI at the Helm: Advancements in Electronics and Autonomous Systems”, from 9-10am CDT at the Hilton Rockwall/Dallas Lakefront in Rockwall, Texas. The session will cover how Avikus products use AI to interpret sensor inputs, identify nearby objects, and support navigation and docking.
The Genoa International Boat Show will host Shin on 2 October 2026 as part of its Artificial Intelligence Programme. His presentation will examine the use of AI in superyacht navigation, as well as the development and integration of intelligent vessel systems.
At the IBEX Education Conference in Tampa, Florida, on 7 October 2026, Shin will present “From Automotive ADAS to Marine ADS: Why Integration Matters” from 3:15-3:45pm EDT. The session will consider lessons from automotive ADAS and the integration required for assisted and autonomous marine systems.
Shin previously served as Avikus’ director of strategic planning and business development, where he worked on the company’s expansion into recreational boating. His experience includes strategic planning, business development and the deployment of AI-assisted navigation technology.
Avikus develops autonomous navigation technology for HD Hyundai. Its Neuboat system includes Neuboat Dock and Neuboat Dock II, which use camera views, object detection and a docking-assist path. Neuboat Navi with Control provides information on the location, distance and speed of stationary and moving objects ahead. The system also includes an autopilot and user interface.
Neuboat received CES Innovation recognition in 2022 and 2023, a Red Dot Design Award in 2024, and an iF Design Award, NMMA Innovation Award at the Miami International Boat Show and recognition as one of Boating Industry’s 2025 Top Products in 2025.
